Career Guidance & Counseling
Career Guidance and Counselling for Students Confused About Streams

In India, students face a lot of pressure after completing their Class 10 board exams. As many students are unsure of which stream of study to choose (Science, Commerce or Arts), they rely heavily on suggestions made by friends and family about the ‘best’ option available to them. Many of these recommendations are made with little to no knowledge of the other career options available to their child.

This can result in students making poor choices for themselves, leading to regret and/or dropping out of school.

Career guidance and counselling can help identify a student’s interests and help them set goals for future career paths. There are many ways to approach career guidance and counselling, but a good starting point is the use of aptitude tests. These tests assess the skills a student possesses, allowing a career counsellor to match students with a career field in which they would excel (e.g., A student with strong logical reasoning abilities may be more suited for engineering, while a student with strong creative skills would be more suited for design).

Counsellors often encourage students to pursue non-traditional areas of study such as vocational training in hospitality or digital marketing. The sooner students receive career counselling and guidance, the less stressful this support will be for them than if they wait until they are in a high-stress situation to receive assistance.

Role of Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric testing is an increasingly popular way to provide career guidance and counselling to students. Psychometric tests use validated questionnaires to measure interests, personality and skills to help students determine their ideal career path. Based on the results of psychometric testing, students can be placed into student profiles that will assist them in choosing the correct stream of study. Psychometric tests are structured in a simple format so that students can understand the results easily. Because psychometric tests consider multiple intelligences, no talent is overlooked.

Parents gain insights too, learning to support rather than dictate choices. Regular updates to tests incorporate evolving job trends, making recommendations relevant.

Science Stream Insights

Ambitious students pursuing medicine, engineering, or research are often attracted to the Science stream, particularly the PCM and PCB streams, as they provide access to highly sought-after degrees. Counselors consider it necessary to advise appropriately regarding potential work-related stress in the Science discipline through proper Career Guidance and Counselling, while also assessing the capabilities of individuals in regards to their potential career aspirations through mathematical and biological testing, thereby avoiding “Burnout”.

Furthermore, students may also wish to explore Biotechnology and/or Data Science as new and emerging career paths, providing them with the opportunity of pursuing a career without experiencing the same level of competition and/or pressure that is often associated with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Success depends on coaching alongside school, with counselors recommending NEET or JEE prep strategies. This stream suits problem-solvers passionate about innovation.

Commerce Stream Advantages

Students interested in Finance, Business, or Law are drawn to the Commerce stream, as those careers can provide students with stable careers within Banking Institutions (CA’s and other Financial Institutions) and Entrepreneurial Ventures. Career guidance and counselling emphasise breaking down the core subjects (accounts and economics) and connecting them to career pathways through CAs or MBAs, or Stock Trading. In addition, Counsellors have pointed out that the development and evaluation of one’s Soft Skills are important additional factors when considering whether or not one will succeed in a Management Position.

There are many opportunities to expand your career horizons with India’s economy growing rapidly through new options such as financial technology (fintech) and electronic commerce (e-commerce). Additionally, having a balanced workload allows for students to pursue other interests outside of academics. This builds a more well-rounded individual and creates a positive impression on future employers.

Arts and Humanities Pathways

Many Creative Minds (those belonging to the Arts Stream), have the opportunity to explore the fields of Journalism, Psychology or Public Service through Insight Career Guidance and Counselling in an attempt to stop perceiving the Arts Stream as providing limited career opportunities. The Career Guidance and Counselling Facilitators will provide exposure to the areas of Creative Content Creation, UX Design and International Relations as well as Aptitude Testing to provide students with a means to assess their talents in the areas of Writing Skills and Public Speaking Skills.

Flexible curricula enable skill-building through online courses. Graduates often excel in startups or NGOs, blending passion with purpose.

Emerging and Vocational Streams

Most students are interested in vocational options that are not traditional sectors (engineering, business, etc.) because these sectors offer greater potential for job readiness (more flexible). Career counselling services provide assistance with applying for vocational degree programs (e.g., ITI or ANIM) through these vocational programs, as well as a greater degree of direction in selecting courses of interest. Additionally, the integration of career guidance services with the mainstream educational system allows for many students to explore “hybrid” professions that incorporate elements from both streams.

Government schemes like Skill India boost accessibility, especially in regions like Indore Personalized Talent Mapping Family Counseling Sessions – Align student potential with parent’s aspirations.

Determine the top five occupations for each stream based on student score.

  • College/Course Matching – Which institutes to apply for (DU, NMIMS) based upon minimum cut-offs required.
  • Skill Gap Analysis – Determine if students should take bridge courses to transfer to another stream.
  • Tracking Follow-Up – The Counselor will continue to monitor student progress throughout Class 12 and throughout high school.

Parental Involvement Strategies

Parents play an important role in guiding and advising their children in their career choices; however, they can sometimes be too involved and limit their ability to make independent decisions. For this reason, counselors will facilitate joint sessions with parents and students so that they can discuss the reports and outcomes of their student’s assessments objectively. In addition to being able to provide parents and students with information about available jobs, these meetings will help reduce the anxiety about venturing into a non-traditional area of study that may require taking some risks. Parents will learn about the job market and how to assist their children in making informed decisions

Encouraging internships or shadowing builds real-world exposure.

Overcoming Common Myths

Beliefs that a degree in Science guarantees a job will discourage students from making balanced choices with regards to their career choice; however, Career Guidance and Counselling will assist students to make informed decisions through data regarding Employability Rates. Obtaining a degree in a field within the Arts Stream does not mean a student will become unemployed; many Alumni from Art Programs have gone on to achieve success in the fields of Media or Policy. In addition, counselors will use case studies to demonstrate the variety of successes that can be achieved by Alumni from Arts Programme .
